Salsomaggiore Terme is the right destination for a short break: an hour from Milan, half an hour from Parma, and once the car is parked everything is within walking distance. Here is a two-day itinerary starting from the centre.
Saturday morning: the Liberty-style centre
Start from Viale Romagnosi, the town's promenade, with its arcades, cafés and Belle Époque villas. In five minutes you reach Piazza Berzieri, in front of the Berzieri Thermal Palace: the 1923 Art Déco masterpiece decorated by Galileo Chini, now home to the new QC Terme wellness centre. The façade and mosaics are worth a stop even without going in.
A few steps away is the Congress Palace, the former Grand Hotel des Thermes: if open for visits, its frescoed halls are among the most beautiful in Emilia.
Saturday afternoon: spas and wellness
The afternoon is for the water. Two options:
- QC Terme Salsomaggiore, at Palazzo Berzieri: a wellness journey with saunas, pools, relaxation rooms and a bistro, inside a monument.
- Zoja Baths, in Mazzini Park: classic thermal treatments with salt-bromine-iodine waters, 400 metres from the centre.
If you prefer greenery, stroll through Mazzini Park, among centuries-old trees and the pond.
Saturday evening: Emilian cuisine
This is the land of Parmigiano Reggiano, Prosciutto di Parma and Culatello di Zibello. A charcuterie board with a Malvasia from the Parma hills is the right way to end the day, followed by tortelli d'erbetta or anolini in broth. The hotel bar is open for an aperitif before going out.
Sunday: castles and hills
By car, within half an hour you reach some of the most beautiful places in the province:
- Scipione Castle (5 km): one of the oldest castles in Emilia, of the Pallavicino marquises, overlooking the hills.
- Tabiano (5 km): the village with its castle and sulphurous baths.
- Castell'Arquato (15 km): a medieval village on the Arda river, among the most beautiful in Italy.
- Fontanellato (20 km): the Sanvitale fortress and the Masone Labyrinth, the largest bamboo maze in the world.
- Fidenza Village (12 km): the outlet, for those who want to end the weekend with some shopping.
If you have more time
Parma is 30 km away: the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Teatro Regio and the Pilotta deserve a full day. Busseto, 25 km away, is Giuseppe Verdi's homeland, with its theatre and Villa Verdi at Sant'Agata. For golfers, the Salsomaggiore Golf & Country Club is 6 km away.
